Horrifying Reality Of What Airport Security Are Able To See When You Walk Through X-ray Machine

A post on X (formerly known as Twitter) has reignited a long-standing sense of shock about the level of detail airport security X-ray machines used to capture. Many travelers are now revisiting just how invasive these machines can be, and some are shocked by what they used to reveal.

Most people are familiar with the airport security routine: You put your bags, jewelry, phone, and shoes on the conveyor belt to be scanned, and then you step into the scanner booth. The experience, even years after it became routine, can still feel a bit dystopian, especially as the machine whirs around you. But you might feel even more uneasy when you realize just how much these scanners could capture.

Most of us probably assume that the X-ray machines only reveal metallic or non-biological objects, and that our bodies are just vague shapes behind the scan. However, a post by X user @greendaylover44 suggests that these machines could see far more than we might have imagined.

In 2020, @greendaylover44 shared an image of what they claimed was a high-detail X-ray image from a TSA machine, showing a completely nude body. The post triggered widespread concern as people realized that their privacy may have been far thinner than they had previously thought when passing through airport security. While these security measures were put in place for safety reasons, prompted by past security breaches, that doesn’t mean we have to feel completely comfortable with them.

The good news is that these images come from an old generation of machines made by the company Rapiscan, which were used by both the TSA and the UK for several years. The backlash against these detailed scans was significant when people discovered just how invasive they were. As a result, action was taken.

In 2013, the TSA ended its contract with Rapiscan due to privacy concerns, and since then, they’ve switched to newer scanners that provide more generic, less detailed body scans. So while it’s understandable that concerns about privacy remain, you can rest easy knowing that your next flight won’t involve exposing yourself to airport workers through these old scanners.
