Psoriasis is a chronic immune disorder where the immune system causes skin cells to multiply too quickly, leading to red, flaky patches, often on the scalp, elbows, or knees. Though its exact cause is unclear, genetics and environmental factors play a role.
Psoriasis can flare up and go into remission in cycles. Treatment options vary, with mild cases managed by creams and ointments, while severe cases may require pills, shots, or light therapy. Psoriasis can increase the risk of other conditions like psoriatic arthritis, heart issues, and mental health struggles. Several types exist, including plaque, guttate, pustular, inverse, and erythrodermic psoriasis. Triggers such as infections, stress, and certain medications can worsen symptoms.
