Russia releases statement after Trump reads out Zelensky’s letter

Russia has responded amid growing tensions between the United States and Ukraine, following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s contentious visit to the White House. The meeting, intended to strengthen ties and discuss key negotiations, quickly turned into a tense confrontation between Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump, with Vice President JD Vance also expressing frustration over Ukraine’s stance on peace talks.

As the diplomatic fallout continues, the Kremlin has officially weighed in on the matter. A spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged the situation, particularly Trump’s decision to pause all military aid to Ukraine, which Moscow has deemed a significant step toward peace.

During the now-infamous meeting, Trump and Vance expressed dissatisfaction with what they perceived as Zelensky’s lack of gratitude for the extensive support Ukraine has received from the U.S. since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Tensions escalated when Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with the lives of millions of people” and risking the possibility of World War III. He further criticized Ukraine’s unwillingness to engage in negotiations, despite mounting pressure from Washington to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing war.

As a result of the disastrous meeting, Trump announced a pause on all military assistance to Ukraine, a decision that has been met with approval in Moscow. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov welcomed the move, calling it “the best contribution to the cause of peace.” Russia has long criticized the West’s continued military support for Ukraine, arguing that it prolongs the conflict rather than fostering a resolution.

Following his unexpected early departure from the White House, Zelensky took the unusual step of addressing Trump and the U.S. Congress in a letter. The letter, which Trump read aloud on March 4, 2025, stated that Ukraine was ready to come to the negotiating table “as soon as possible.” Zelensky emphasized his country’s appreciation for America’s continued assistance in maintaining its sovereignty and independence, while also expressing a willingness to finalize the rare earth minerals deal that was initially set to be signed during his visit.

Zelensky’s letter signaled a shift in Ukraine’s approach, stating, “My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.” The document also reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to concluding an agreement on its valuable mineral resources, a deal that had been overshadowed by the heated discussions at the White House.

Trump responded to Zelensky’s message with cautious optimism, stating, “It’s time to end this senseless war. If you want to end wars, you have to talk to both sides.” His administration has made clear its intention to push Ukraine toward direct negotiations with Russia, something that has been a sticking point in diplomatic efforts since the war began.

Moscow reacted positively to Ukraine’s apparent willingness to negotiate, with Peskov stating, “We are positive. The question is with whom to sit at the negotiating table.” However, he pointed out a major legal barrier, referencing a 2022 decree that bans Ukraine from engaging in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This decree, issued after the start of the war, has effectively blocked formal negotiations between the two nations, making the path to diplomacy more complicated.

“For now, the legal ban by the Ukrainian President holding talks with the Russian side is in force,” Peskov noted, adding that while the Kremlin sees the shift as encouraging, the core issues preventing negotiations remain unchanged. “Overall, the approach is positive, but the details have not changed yet.”

Despite discussions of peace, the conflict continues on the battlefield. Russian forces launched a drone attack on March 4, targeting the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa. The strike killed a 77-year-old woman and left three others injured. Ukrainian officials reported that the attack caused structural damage, igniting fires and destroying private property.

Odesa’s regional governor, Oleh Kiper, confirmed that the woman died from shrapnel wounds on the outskirts of the city. He also reported that the drones inflicted damage on a private home, contributing to the destruction in the region. In response to the attack, Ukrainian forces shot down 115 out of the 181 drones fired by Russia.

The latest developments underscore the fragile state of negotiations and the continued violence on the ground. The situation remains fluid, with both sides engaging in a mix of diplomacy and military operations. As the world watches closely, the question remains whether Ukraine, Russia, and the United States can navigate this complex geopolitical moment toward a meaningful resolution.

The coming days will be crucial in determining the direction of the war and whether the talks being proposed can lead to a ceasefire or a lasting agreement. With tensions high and military engagements ongoing, the road to peace remains uncertain. The world now waits to see how both Ukraine and Russia respond in the aftermath of these diplomatic shifts, and whether Trump’s approach will pave the way for a meaningful resolution.
